2017 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel – Better Mileage Than A Prius

Step aside Prius, there’s another fuel efficient ride in town. The Chevrolet Cruze Diesel sedan has been officially certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (ETA) at 52 miles per gallon on the highway, when packing a six-speed manual transmission. To be overly thorough, the hatchback can theoretically go more than 700 miles on a full tank of diesel. That’s New York to Detroit, with miles to spare.

The manual Cruze beats the Prius by 2 mpg in EPA highway rating. But, the Prius beats the Cruzes 37 mpg out with its 52 mpg in the combined cycle.

Rumors circled last fall that the Cruze Diesel may get 50 miles per gallon on the highway. So this news is even sweeter than we expected. This seems fine and great, but the sales … not so much. Sales plummeted late last year as GM prepared is 2017 version. It also didn’t help that Chevy introduced the all-electric Bolt.

The Cruze is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine and makes 137 horsepower with 240 lb-ft of torque. The price starts at $24,670, so we’re thinking this ride is a cheap risk for the reward.

And the diesel will not explode in a catastrophic collision. If you have to be extracted by emergency personnel after an accident, and you happen to have been doused with Diesel fuel, you can still light up your cigar while you wait.

This is not altogether new technology, by the way. In 1965 my father purchased a Mercedes-Benz Diesel 4 door sedan with a 22 cubic foot trunk, which routinely got 36 miles per gallon, and an all time high of 42 mpg during an “economy run” in the Mercedes-Benz Club.
