Drone Footage Shows Tesla’s Gigafactory Progress

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F9ON-8rSnM

Tesla needs the Gigafactory for a few reasons. The biggest one? To deliver the Model 3 and the dream of an affordable, yet reliable electric car. The complex in Nevada will be used to produce batteries at an incredibly high scale. But, before that can happen, CEO Elon Musk needs to build the place. Fresh footage shot with a DJI Phantom 3 drone in 4K, gives us a look at how the factory is coming along. As expected, it’s still got a long way to go (only a handful of the 21 Gigafactory “blocks” have been completed so far.) Even so, you can tell from the video above, this enormous building dominates the desert landscape.

Tesla hasn’t announced when they expect the Gigafactory to be completed. But when that time comes, the automaker hopes to produce 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of capacity each year. That’s about what they need to keep up with its planned production rate of 500,000 cars per year. Just in case we need to reinforce how big this place will be, it will stretch 107 NFL football fields. Whether Tesla will deliver on time and under budget is another matter. The company is ambitious, but has a reputation for missing its delivery goals. Here’s to hoping the factory runs as smoothly as planned!
