Voluntary Recall Issued For Over One Million Ram Trucks
It’s no secret that airbags save lives. They also protect us from serious injuries that can occur from crashes, and we’ve come to rely on them for every day driving. The technology isn’t exactly new, so the news of a recent recall due to faulty airbags is somewhat concerning. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has just issued a voluntary recall for more than 1.25 million Ram pickup trucks. The recall is for a software bug that may prevent the side-curtain airbags from deploying. The affected models include 2013-2016 Ram 1500 and 2500, and 2014-2016 Ram 3500. What do these trucks have in common? A certain feature called roll-state sensing.
A software coding error may incorrectly determine that this sensor has failed if there is a “significant underbody impact.” If this is the case, the deployment of both the side airbags and seat belt pretensions could be disabled. Fortunately, this problem has an easy fix – a software refresh. FCA plans to notify affected owners in the US, Canada and Mexico beginning next month to prevent any future accidents.
