The Dodge Challenger Demon’s Power Chiller Is No Joke
And it’s getting some serious recognition. It would be easy to assume that the 2018 Dodge Challenger Demon would receive awards for its outrageous speed. I mean, 0-60 mph in 2.1 seconds is no laughing matter. But the muscle car is also packed with a number of new bits of technology. In fact, one of these tech pieces just received Popular Science magazine’s annual Best of What’s New awards for technology. It’s the SRT Power Chiller.
The Power Chiller uses the Demon’s air conditioning refrigerant to help cool compressed air entering the 840-hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8. To break it down, the Hemi V8 uses a liquid circuit that’s separate from the engine cooling circuit to cool air after it leaves the supercharger. The SRT Power Chiller is activated only in Drag Mode, diverts air conditioning refrigerant from the cabin to the chiller unit. The supercharger air coolant then passes through a low-temp radiator up front, which then flows through the SRT Power Chiller unit, where it’s cooled even more by the refrigerant. This seems very complicated, but we’re sure that they know what they’re doing, and why they’re doing it.
“The Best of What’s New awards honor the innovations that shape the future,” said Joe Brown, Editor in Chief, Popular Science. “From life-saving technology to incredible space engineering to gadgets that are just breathtakingly cool, this is the best of what’s new.”
